An investigation is underway after a fire and explosion at a house in Bristol last night which left three people injured.

It happened just before 8pm on Whitchurch Lane in the Hartcliffe area.

Nearby roads were closed by emergency services as a precaution as crews worked at the scene.

First aid was administered to three people who were taken to hospital by ambulance.

Witnesses described a woman hanging out of a window after the blast and emergency service rescue teams and a search dog searched the building.

The cause of the incident is not yet known.

After the incident one nearby resident Tweeted: "Somewhere nearby I think a boiler exploded as the house was shaken by a loud, but muffled, explosion that rocked the windows."

An Avon Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "On arrival, crews found a fire within the building with significant structural damage and committed two firefighters in breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire, while other firefighters assisted in administering first aid to three casualties on the scene.

"Crews are currently working with police, ambulance, and the local authority to make the scene safe and assess the integrity of the building."
