A group of residents in Weston is calling on North Somerset Council to look again at where the new swimming pool in the town will be built.
The group - called J21Plus - want it to be on the seafront rather than at Hutton Moor because they think there would be more visitors due to other attractions nearby including the beach and the pier.
J21Plus spokesman and local resident Dave Stanford explains, ‘ Weston is the premier seaside resort on the North Somerset coast and boasts a number of top class facilities, such as, the wide sandy beach, the excellent Grand Pier, first class hotels, pubs and restaurants and a good range of shops."
"However, being on the Severn Estuary, it lacks that family friendly swim/paddle experience."
"We believe that if a new world class seafront pool was built then it would complete the picture and add significantly to Weston’s appeal."
"It would obviously benefit both residents and visitors alike."
Prominent hotelier Keith Fern, of the Midland Hotel, has expressed strong support: ‘I believe that a new seafront pool would provide a valuable new attraction for Weston, which would bring in additional visitors who are so important to the local economy’.
The project has also been endorsed by town councillor for Weston’s Central Ward, Robert Payne, who said: ‘I strongly support this project’s aim to provide a world class seafront leisure pool.'
"This would demonstrate the council’s commitment to the regeneration of Weston town centre and seafront, and provide a major boost to the town’s economy. I am also impressed by the enthusiasm and drive of the team involved which gives hope that this could genuinely come to fruition".
