Bristol Vs Chiefs
They say a change is better than a rest and after just 5 days of not having to get up at 4am for the breakfast show, I can absolutely confirm that as true. My 1st ever breakfast show was in 1999 for a station called FOX fm in Oxford, the station I had grown up listening to and now to be sat in front of the microphone that all my childhood radio hero’s had used was absolutely terrifying. I still have a recording of that show and you can hear the fear in my quivering voice. The breakfast show is generally the show that has the biggest audience and the most kudos, so taking it on is a big deal, but as I found out last week, leaving it is even bigger.
We’d started talking about changing my role at Sam FM over a year ago, I wanted to get more involved in the running of the stations. I’ve done breakfast shows for 17 years and there is no doubt that the early starts take their toll on your health and personal life too, but I’d always felt that the enjoyment I’d got from it outweighed the tired eyes and extra kilos, but when our parent company Celador proposed the best of both worlds, I knew the time was right to hang up my breakfast show headphones.
My new role means I can concentrate on creating fun and innovative programming ideas for both Sam FM and The Breeze (Sam’s sister stations) networks around the 20 transmitters we have all over the UK but at the same time, and perhaps more importantly to this column, I continue to present Sam’s World of Sport on a Saturday morning and the brand new Sam Rock’s Rugby show which launches tonight! So if you ever can’t make it to Ashton Gate for a home game, you’ll be able to hear the action as it happens on Sam FM!
Sam Rock’s Rugby is an innovative idea which (as far as I’m aware) is not being done anywhere else in the UK. We’ll have pre-match interviews with the coaches, exclusive analysis from squad members during the game and of course we’ll keep you up to date with everything that’s happening on the pitch. What makes this show different however is that it’s mixed with some massive rock songs for when the clock is stopped along with Sam’s unique style and completely biased passion for Bristol. That’s the Sam Rock’s Rugby difference! Coverage of every home game here at Ashton Gate is guaranteed. You can listen on 106.5 FM in Bristol, 107.7 FM in Swindon or online at samfm.co.uk or wherever you may be in the county or indeed The World on our mobile apps.
The #SamTeamSport boys Toby Osborne and Dan White are so excited for this new show as am I, so wish us luck for tonight and tell all your rugby mates that can’t come to the games to give us a listen!
