Police in Hampshire to work extended hours during England Game

Hampshire Police officers are going to work extended hours, double shifts, and have their rest days cancelled to cover busy areas during England's World Cup semi-final match on Wednesday.

Chairman of Hampshire Police Federation, John Apter, said the force will be stretched to provide support during England's game against Croatia on Wednesday night.

After England's last World Cup game against Sweden on Saturday (7th July), videos emerged of a person standing on top of buses in Southampton, prompting a bigger police presence for Wednesday's game.

Speaking about the police who will be working in Hampshire during the match, John Apter said:

"These are officers who've had their rest days cancelled, they're working extended hours, they're working double shifts on some occasions, and they're being pulled in from different areas."

"This is not about having extra police officers on the street, we simply are spreading the thin blue line even thinner."

John said:

"I would ask if people want to be idiots and cause damage and cause mayhem, then stay at home, because we just don't have the time or the ability to deal with idiots, they're not what we want to have to waste our time on."
