FREE LIVE ROLLER DERBY! Charity Sevens
Saturday, November 16th
Wiltshire Roller Derby are Swindon’s very own local roller derby team, currently ranked #61 in Europe and recent winners of the British Championship 2019 Tier 2 which was broadcast live by the BBC. We’re hosting our annual charity fund raising event and are aiming to raise money for local cancer charities.
A day of roller derby at the Oasis Leisure Centre in Swindon. Two mini tournaments, one for women and the other for men, each with 4 teams all playing each other in a shortened “sevens” version of roller derby.
Local cancer charities and other good causes are being invited to attend free of charge to raise awareness of their organisations and their cause. Entrance is free for spectators but we will be asking for donations on the door and running a number of stalls and other fund raisers on the day. All proceeds from the event will be go to two local care hospices – Prospect Hospice in Swindon and Dorothy’s House in Bath.
WHAT IS ROLLER DERBY?
Flat track roller derby originates from Austin, Texas (USA). It is played on quad skates on an oval track, teams score points by their nominated “jammer” lapping the opposing teams “blockers”. It sounds simple but it’s a very technical sport with full contact, meaning big hits and requiring a high level of skating skills.
