Police Dog 'Baxter' spots £70,000 worth of cannabis at Salisbury shop

Springer Spaniel helped find the Class B drug in the Wiltshire town.

A Wiltshire Police Dog called Baxter has located approximately £70,000 worth of cannabis at a store in Salisbury yesterday.

Officers visited a premises in Glenmore Business Park at around 2pm following information from the public that drug activity was taking place.

The shop was then searched under Section 32 of the Misuse of Drugs Act by officers and search dog Baxter - a seven-year-old Springer Spaniel.

Initially, they located a small amount of what appeared to be cannabis and arrested a man in his 30s on suspicion of possession of a class B drug.

A large amount of herbal cannabis and cannabis resin was located - believed to have an estimated street value of around £70,000.

The man, as well as a second man in his 30s, were then also arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class B drugs.

Both have been released under investigation and enquiries continue.

PCSO Matt Murray said: “After receiving intelligence from the local community about suspected cannabis use at the location, we attended the premises alongside the dog unit.

This incident just shows how important the community is in helping us build an intelligence picture and take the appropriate action. Without the building and sharing of intelligence, this result would not have been possible. I am grateful to Baxter for his assistance.”

PC Darren Willis, who is Baxter’s handler, said: “Baxter is a fantastic search dog, and he did a great job yesterday in assisting officers at the premises.

“This is exactly the type of job that our dogs are trained to assist at and I am really pleased that Baxter was able to help us seize more than 5kg of cannabis and prevent it from reaching our streets.”
